Late in her life the wonderful entertainer Pearl Bailey decided she wanted to get her college degree. She enrolled in Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. with a major in French. That sounded pretty ambitious to me, but knowing Pearl Bailey only slightly, having worked with her, I was not surprised. Well into her studies, which she relished, she suddenly decided to switch her major to Theology. When asked why the change she replied, “God is so much easier to understand than French.” Wow! This is spoken by a woman who knew about faith and a relationship with God. When we worked together I noticed that she always had an open Bible in her dressing room and each day it was turned to a different chapter. It was not a dust collector on the side table, but an important part of her day and her devotions. She spoke of God and Jesus as trusted friends and it was obvious her relationship was deeply felt, as she kept up her communication through prayer and reading. On her way to the stage she would often say to me, “did you talk to him today?” I always knew exactly what she meant, and was happy to always say, “yes.”
I have never forgotten her example of building relationship with God. God is not a far off deity, unavailable to us, but right where we are at every moment. We may be preparing to fix dinner, rushing out the door, leaving to go to a movie, preparing to power-walk on our daily exercise routine, rushing to speak to someone in need, or about to go out onstage and do “Hello, Dolly!,” but we can always stop for a moment, even a brief moment, and acknowledge that God is there with us, meeting our every need, no matter what it may be.
Know that you are never alone, for is always right where you are at every moment. And know that comfort and peace await your recognition of a God who loves us unconditionally.
Affirmation: “Knowing that I am never alone, I know that the Christ goes before me, charting a course of perfection.”
