Scientists have done studies in which flies are placed in a jar and forced to live in a confined space.  Later, when the scientists remove the top of the jar the flies are so conditioned to their space that, with few exceptions, they remain right in that space.  New possibility is available to them, but they are still spinning in the same old thoughts.

Experiments with baby elephants have shown that when they are young they are shackled with chains of heavy links to posts.  Over time as they grow the strength of the chain is slowly made smaller.  By the time the elephants are adults and fully grown they are tied with a small thin thread to a twig and the elephants stay right where they are.  New possibility is available to them, but they are still spinning in the same old thoughts.

Fish in a tank were separated from one another by a glass partition and they lived this way for a period of time. They could see the other fish, but they couldn’t interact with them.  Finally the partition was removed but the fish remained on their side of the tank, never swimming into the new territory and joining the other fish.  New possibility is available to them, but they are still spinning in the same old thoughts.

What thoughts are we spinning in, nursing, cultivating and affirming about ourselves today?  If we think all is well with the way our life is going then great, keep up the good work.  But if life has a way of not working out the way we would wish, perhaps we need to realize a new truth.  A truth that includes the presence of God, right where we are, offering us new and unlimited potential.  Our God is not a God of limitation, but a God of abundance.  There is no partition separating us from all that we could be in life other than the one we erect through the power of our thinking.  If we continue to think and affirm that we cannot do this or that, or we continue to think we will never succeed, then of course that will be the reality we experience.  You can even think of it as the prayer we offered up and was answered.  We said, “I can’t,” and so that has come to pass.  But…what about if we turned our thoughts and our intentions to the affirmative side of life?  What if we changed “I can’t,” to “I can?”  All we need to do is eliminate the apostrophe and the “t.”  That is simple enough.  This shift in our thinking and in our outlook on life is our personal affirmation of the truth that God is with us every moment and is guiding us to experience the fullness of life, the fullest expression of life, that God desires for us.

What to change your life?  Change your thinking.  Want to find the right ingredient that makes it possible?  Add God, faith, trust and a positive belief that your dreams and ideas are God’s dreams and ideas made known to you and for you.

What new affirmation shall we declare about who we are today?  What great things might we accomplish with God as our partner?   You decide.  There is no limit.

Affirmation:  “Good morning God, what new adventures can we experience together this day?”

Cathedral’s of Spirit

“Being built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone.”    (Ephesians 2: 20)

The above scripture is carved atop the entrance of the National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.  Disciples of Christ founder Thomas Campbell envisioned a cathedral church for the denomination in the nation’s capital, one that would light the way for a new nation, guide its path and direct its leaders toward a new humanity for all.  The scripture tells us that Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone, the spark of light, the core of each of our beings that added to the light of others creates a mighty light of healing, prosperity and hope for all.  National City is certainly that witness.

A cathedral may be a beautiful building, but a building has nothing to offer apart from the spirit of those who inhabit it.  We are each the cathedral of Christ’s church.  We are the cathedral that will witness to the world and give it new direction.  We are the cathedral that can proclaim the coming of the Christ anew with our every breath.  Our foundation is the Christ, his light is our light.  It is his energy and vibration of Spirit that moves through us and awaits our recognition of its power.  As we do recognize and affirm this power lives are changed, relationships and bodies are healed and abundance of all good things is magnified before us.  Affirm that light, power and presence of the Christ in your life.  Your life and the lives of those around you will never be the same.

Affirmation: “Christ is the cornerstone of my life.  The grace, power and blessing of the Lord guides me each and every step of my way.”

If you live in, or find yourself visiting Washington, D.C., consider worshiping at National City Christian Church.  (www.nationalcitycc.org) You will be truly blessed and welcome.

Letting God Bless Us

Soren Kierkegaard, the great Danish theologian said, “our greatest achievement is to let God help us.”  What a comfort it can be to come to the realization that after we make our prayers known to God that God knows what to do next.  Instead of telling God just how our prayer needs to be answered, and how the miracle is supposed to arrive, we can let go, and let God handle the big stuff.  We can place our trust in a God who is a master of the details. We are a hands on people and we like to do things that bring results.  Perhaps it is time we began to practice letting go, and letting God care for us.  If there is something that we are to do we affirm that God will point us in that direction, but in the meantime, we have a partner, one that loves us unconditionally and will co-create with us to achieve great things.

God is always far more willing to help us than we are willing to allow that perfect Spirit to bless us.  That often sounds hard to believe, but it is true.  God longs to bless us, longs to have relationship with us and delights when we communicate with God.  We can communicate by sitting in quiet meditation and experience God’s perfect Light and Spirit moving in and through and as us, we can communicate with God through our silent and spoken prayers, and so beautifully we can communicate with God by simply acknowledging the Divine Presence and saying “thank you.”

Let go, let God, and let the miracles happen. As a minister friend of mine has so beautifully said, “my day begins and ends with God, all the rest is just commentary.”

“See if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. (Malachi 3:10b)

Affirmation:  “I relax, I let go, and I let God fill my life with wonders.”

“For I do not seek to understand so that I may believe; but I believe so that I may understand.  For I believe this also, that ‘unless I believe, I shall not understand.”’   (Anselm of Canterbury)

Do something for me after you finish reading this.  Close your eyes, become conscious of your breathing, and relax.  Let go of everything that is chattering about in your mind.  Your breathing can help you do this.  Now, visualize an angel of the Lord before you.  Angels have long been God’s messengers and have brought to the faithful direction, encouragement and hope.  So, with your eyes closed, and in the silence, or with some meditative music, visualize this messenger of God bringing to you the answers that you seek.  See this angel bringing you words from the Christ that can answer your needs, nurture your spirit and heal your body. If you have questions, or prayer concerns, ask them.  Spend some time and just allow this angel to minister to you. Take all the time you need for there is never a hurry. Then, when you are comfortable and feel you have received what the angel would have you to know, slowly, and still being aware of your breathing, open your eyes.  As you do so affirm that whatever you needed to know is now within you.  Even though at this precise moment you may not be able to articulate the message, know that at the proper time it will be revealed to you.  Do this often.  It will get easier with practice and your communication with the divine will set before you a new course that will forever change your life.

Affirmation:  “I believe so that I may understand.  I receive all that I need from an abundant God and my life is good.”

Saying Goodbye, And Saying Hello

I have been off the grid for the last week as I was in Washington, D.C. for a family funeral.  It was for a dear, beloved aunt who has been a special friend all of my life and I had the privilege of helping officiate her service.  Difficult?  Yes, but a special moment to share and honor her life.

Funerals (and to some extent weddings) seem to be some of the only occasions when we connect with extended family members.  I have been blessed throughout my life with a wonderful extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins I truly enjoy.  As time has gone by we have become spread out around the country and don’t get to see one another as often as I would like.  Consequently as we gathered for the funeral at our family church, National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C. this past weekend, and the gathering together to enjoy a meal, we had much to share and catch up on.  In the emotion of our grief and sorrow there was joy in knowing that this beloved aunt was, in many ways, bringing the family back together.  How wonderful that as each of us have grown and evolved into quite different people than we were as children, that we still delight in one another in so many ways.  As we talked, laughed, cried and told stories it seemed obvious that a new bonding has occurred in our relationships.  I know that we will be better at staying in touch in the future.

This renewal of our family bond can’t help but make me reflect on our extended family relationships we create throughout our life.  Our work place relationships, those in our church, and even in our neighborhoods.  God has sent many people to populate our lives and make them interesting.  Some of these people challenge us to find ways to love them and bless them as Jesus would.  Many others are just easy to love and our relationships with them joyous and exciting.  When we understand that each person we encounter is on their own individual journey of life, with their own individual expression, and created with unconditional love by God, we can move to a higher place of blessing them.  Not always agreeing with them, but blessing them that they may know God and allow God to direct their life in new and meaningful lives.  We must always wish and pray for others those things for which we would wish and pray for ourselves.  God’s grace is poured out to all, as we read in scripture.  In this we do indeed find our comfort.

Sometimes we have to say goodbye, sometimes we say hello.  Through it all God is right where we are to walk with us, minister unto us, bless us and love us.  Celebrating all of life in its many expressions is our ultimate display of trust in God.

May God continue to bless and keep you and your families, extended and otherwise.

Rev. Jefferson Beeker

The Plot Twists of Life

The art of storytelling fascinates me.  Most good writers will point to the three- act structure of storytelling as the key to making the story build, draw the reader in, and make it interesting.

The basic three-act structure is this:

ACT 1 – Set –up – exposition.  Introduction – get to know everything

ACT 2 – Rising action – plot twists

ACT 3 – Resolution – climax

Good writers have a way of using this structure in innovative ways that doesn’t call attention to the structure itself, but nevertheless the structure has informed their work.

I was recently thinking about this story structure and how our individual life stories unfold.  I would submit the structure could be viewed as very much the same.

We are the director, writer and producer of our lives.  So, as the creator of our life experience how do we create our story?  I would submit we create our story very much like the three act structure of storytelling we might use to write a piece of fiction.  Think about it:

ACT 1 – the Set –up.  Much of this we may not have had a lot of control over.  We were born where we were born, with whatever ethnicity we may have, to parents we have had, and surrounded by whatever environment was present.  Much of Act One, in many cases, we have just inherited.  Then comes Act Two:

ACT 2 – the Rising action.  We begin to make some choices, some good, some bad, but choices just the same.  How do we react or deal with the hand we were dealt in act one?  How do we label those experiences and therefore how do we make new choices?  Do we choose to see life as a positive experience even in the face of adversity, or do we choose to let circumstances defeat us and so we think that life is a negative and fruitless experience?  Do we allow God/Spirit to assist us in making the choices we make and, and even greater, how much faith and trust in God do we have as we make those choices?

Act two, in any good story, is filled with plot twists that propel the leading character to make the tough choices.  Some choices are easy, but some plot twists can really cause us to examine our choices deeply.

Case in point:  I have a friend who is a professional church organist.  He has made his living playing in churches on Sunday, director choirs, traveling the world giving concerts and recording some of the most beautiful organ music I have ever heard.  He experienced a plot twist that none of would ever wish to experience.

About ten years ago my friend was in a terrible automobile accident that resulted in his loosing his left arm at the shoulder.  It seemed that any chance of his resuming his career was lost.  Needless to say he had some major decisions to make about his future.

Fortunately for him he always had a profound, deep and positive faith in God and outlook on life.  It was that positive outlook, based on choices he had made before, that helped get him through this terrible time.  Was he to give up his dream of continuing his career as a concert organist and do something else, or was he to see how his ministry of music could continue to uplift people and serve God?

Through this plot twist of life my friend decided he would learn to play the organ in a new way.  With one hand and with the pedals.  Could this be done?  Through his determination and faith he trusted that it was not only possible, but that his career could thrive and touch people in a new and exciting way.  This terrible plot twist and his decisions and choices, as well as his faith in a God in whom all things are possible, created triumph over tragedy.   He is perhaps now more successful than he ever was, and his courage and faith have inspired many people who have also faced life changing plot twists.

So, what new choices will you make today about the plot twists in your life?  What plot twists, and your choices about them, will propel you to a new place?  Perhaps that new place is not one you ever thought you would experience, but as you affirm that the presence of God is always right where you are at every moment, going through with you whatever you may be experiencing, you will begin to see life in a new way.  Our reactions to the plot twists of life create what we will experience in act three.

ACT 3 is what we have decided to make it, based on those choices, THOUGHTS, beliefs and positive affirmations we have decided to introduce.   It is also important to remember that the enfoldment of our story in these three acts has less to do with our age and much more to do with our decisions and thoughts.

An affirmative thought has infinitely more power than a negative thought.  Most people have been too easily living life as it comes along without consciously directing their thinking, their faith and their belief in God based on love and possibility.

The next chapter of your story begins with your next thought.  Your next prayer, your next decision.  It begins with where you place your faith and trust.  It may have taken years to get to where you are now, but always remember that a positive thought is ever more powerful than a negative thought.  The introduction of positive thoughts will dissolve a negative thought pattern and create a new paradigm of thinking in your life.

Remember that what thought has done – thought can undo.  (Thank you Dr. Ernest Holmes)

Welcome today a major new plot twist in the story of your life by changing your thinking and trusting in a God who loves you unconditionally.

In the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy we read, “Choose life.”  That is a choice worth embracing.  Choose life.  Choose to see God working in your life no matter what plot twists you may be experiencing.  Choose life in the face of these plot twists.

The God who asks us to CHOOSE LIFE pours out blessing upon blessing on us, but we need to relax, or be still, and notice the presence of God right where we are.

Plot twists in your life?  You bet.  But so is God in your life to love you, hold you, bless you and sustain you, this day and always.  Choose life.  Not because I said so, but because God loves you.

God, healing, Jesus, miracles, prayer, Spirit

Image

One of my dear friends is the Rev. Dr. Marlene Morris, who is now a minister in Cambria, California. Since she has moved we rely on email to keep in touch. We haven’t seen one another face to face in several years, but we enjoy sharing ideas and answered prayers with one another.  We also know that the other person is there for support in those times when perhaps we feel a little far away from God.         Recently I was sharing some prayer answers with her and the miracles that God has shown to me.  In her reply she sent the following quote, which I just love, and wanted to share.  When I wrote her that for me this particular miracle showed up in quite an unusual way, and certainly one I had not thought possible, she wrote, “Open eyes see things. Open minds know things. Open hearts accept things. That’s when the miracles happen.”

This quote reminds me so much that as we await the answers to our prayers we must remain conscious of the presence of God working all around us.  We also must not decide before hand how our answer is to come, nor are we to “hope for the best,” or say, “maybe God will hear me,” or even “if I’m lucky God will have a moment to send me a blessing.”

We must always remember that on the unseen side of life the answers to our prayers are being formed.  They may not have shown up for us to see just yet, but Spirit is forever moving and creating because that is always what God/Spirit does.

God’s energy and vibration of perfection operates seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day and there is enough of God for all of us.  As we connect with God/Spirit we can expand our finite minds to understand and experience still more of God’s infinite being.

Yes, let’s open our eyes to see more of God.   Let’s open our minds to understand more of God.  Let’s open our hearts to feel more of God.  Let’s all be open.

“The reason I speak to them in parables is that seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.”

                                                                                                                                 (Matthew 13:13)

Affirmation: “My eyes, my mind and my heart are open to God.  Of course I see miracles.”

I am not sure where I read this, but I think it’s wonderful and wanted to share it.

The musicians at a nightclub were complaining about an old piano.  The keys would often stick and the sound was truly hideous.  After months of listening to the grumbling and whining the nightclub owner finally decided to do something about it…he sent the piano out to be painted.

This makes me think.  How often do we settle for a paint job, a cover-up, instead of getting a full-blown tune-up?  It is easy to adorn ourselves with the trappings of faith by memorizing Bible verses or even some prayers, but those words are meaningless to us if we do not understand the deeper meanings and learn to live out that truth.  The Apostle Paul addressed this when he wrote the church in Corinth, “If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”

Love, Light, God, Spirit, Peace, Grace; these are all the presence of God right where we are at every moment.  When we allow this realization of the Divine Presence to lead and mold our lives suddenly everything in our outer experience cannot help but change.  It starts with love.  Love as God has loved us, wherever we are and at every moment.  An unconditional love, poured out freely to all those who would receive it and live it.

Our experience of God in our lives then is lived from the inside out, not the other way around.  Fill yourself with this God Light and the keys of your very being will play beautiful and harmonious music.  God’s music, sung through you.

Affirmation:  “The mighty Spirit of God works through me at this and every moment.”

Yes, Lord, I Believe

“When he entered the house, the blind men came to Jesus; and Jesus said to them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’ They said to him, ‘Yes, Lord.’ Then he touched their eyes and said, ‘According to your faith let it be done to you.’”   (Matthew 9:28-29)

Jesus’ statement to the blind men of  “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” has great significance. Without our first trusting in the ability of the Christ presence, no miracles could ever happen.   It is in our belief that we begin to actively experience our prayer life.  It has been said, and I agree, that we live in our thoughts.  Our thoughts can send us soaring forth to do great and mighty acts, or they can stop us right in our tracks.  God is available to us, as close as our very next thought.  As we turn our thoughts to the promises of God, trusting in his love, grace and presence, as well as trusting in His ability to answer our prayers, we make a powerful declaration of faith.  Christ is there, awaiting our acknowledgement of Him.  When we do, pray believing, and trust that we will recognize the answers when they come, we open the space for miraculous things to happen.  Remember, so often the answers we seek come in ways we had not expected, so praying as part of our prayer, “and I recognize my answers as they come,” is also a powerful declaration our faith.  God may have even greater things in store for you than you ever imagined as you pray.  So be open to see the new, experience the miracles, and share the joy.

I have been out of town for the last week, so to all of you I wish a happy and wonderful New Year.

Affirmation:  “Miracles are everywhere.  I see them, because I first believed.”

I marvel at just how awesome is our God. Recently before our Sunday 5:30 SpiritSong service a group of us were standing on the landing outside the social hall doors amazed at the beautiful colors that appeared in the westward sky. Shades of blue, magenta, purple, and clouds that looked like waves of white cotton arranged in a beautiful formation. The synthesis of the colors and clouds was like a beautiful painting that defied description. This was indeed, and could only be, the handiwork of God presented to all to stir the spirit and inspire the soul.

The Psalms often speak of the awesomeness and the magnificence of God. So wondrous is the presence of Spirit God in our lives that we can scarcely take it all in. Look around you. Whatever you see is the creation of a loving God who beholds you in awesome wonder as well.

So often I am so overcome with the wonder of God everywhere I look that I simply have to stop and try take it all in. I try to comprehend the fullness of God’s presence and grace and yet I cannot. No human can, and yet we can allow that Spirit around us to change and move us to a greater understanding of God working in, through, and as our very being.

If you are feeling low, in need of healing of any kind, concerned as to what action you should next take in your life, I suggest it is an especially a good time to stop and truly recognize the flawlessness of God that is always right where you are at every moment. Breath in this Holy presence, let it anchor within you a new understanding of this incredible power to change your life.

Yes, God, you are indeed an awesome and wondrous God. Mighty to behold, unconditionally loving and forever faithful. May we forever recognize and be grateful for this and all of our blessings, for we also read in Psalms, “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.”

“For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth.” (Psalm 47: 2)

Affirmation: “Sometimes the only response to God is to say, ‘Thank you.’”
