Here it is on the street corner. A church. A building of brick and mortar, a building constructed by human hands through much manual labor, much thought, much planning and much prayer. It casts an interesting shadow as the sun moves across the sky and the church seems to be reaching out across the street, reaching into neighbor’s yards, as if it is trying with all of its might to extend its reach to the populace. The shadow casts the church silhouette over the intersection of the two streets crossing as if to anoint it with safe passage for all who pass through. This is Holy Ground, but not a Holy Ground that is locked into a few square yards of earth, but a Holy Ground waiting in the starting gate ready to spring forth with a mission.

The building sits in its stillness as if waiting for something, as if in anticipation of life dwelling within its presence to ignite an energy of Spirit. The stillness is as if the building is pausing in a moment of inner reflection to catch its breath before something major and life-changing is to occur.

Sunlight streams through the huge windows on one side of the sanctuary as if God is shining forth a Divine beacon to anoint the structure and all who enter in. It is as if this light shines forth to begin a new creation. Where once there was darkness there is now light to draw in and to welcome all who are in need of feeling the touch of the Divine Presence, God. The light calls out as if to say, “Come. Enter in and find peace. Enter in and allow God to bless you today.”

From its emptiness God’s people begin to arrive. They greet one another warmly in the name of Christ and then take their seats. Some enter in groups and some sit in groups, some enter alone and sit alone, perhaps lonely. Seeking, praying, hoping. Each person who enters is a perfect creation of an unconditionally loving God. And yet, out of God’s oneness each person who enters is unique. Out of one –many. Each are individual parts of God making up a Divine whole. Many parts, one body. Many souls, one church. Each has something for which God has called them to do for the wholeness and mission of God’s church. All is stronger because of its parts. Just as the bricks were placed with precision by the human builders so that the building is strong and safe, all who are called as God’s people into God’s house are placed with perfect exactness and blessing by the master builder. Each arrives with a special gift of Spirit to be a witness and a light in an individual and unique way. Some know what their gift is, what their mission is. They know what God has called them to do and come this day to be fed with the Spirit so that they may go forth and help change the world. Others come not knowing what God has in store for them. Not because God has not decided as yet for them, but because they have not understood their individual place in the larger whole. But today they have come to move still closer to understanding that vision of God for them and to make that revelation a part of their everyday life.

The sanctuary fills, the prelude music begins. Pews filled with different expressions of the One God, praying silently, “Here I am Lord, send me.”
