God has made us all a promise to love us equally, just as we are and just as we are not. We are called to do likewise.

Psalm 133 is a beautiful Psalm about unity and communal love and it calls all humankind to live together in peace. Living together and loving one another with a holy love. This unity is one of recognizing and really seeing our differences from one another and celebrating that uniqueness, not judging or casting out those we perceive different from ourselves. God wants us to celebrate who and what we are, male, female, gay, straight, celebrate our national origin and claim our place as children of God in God’s kingdom right here on earth.

We have each been wonderfully made. Each the same, and yet each different. Each the same for we are made by God with the substance of God. In the image of perfect Spirit. And yet, we are also unique expressions of God set forth upon our earth for an individual purpose and with individual gifts. It is these individual gifts that give our world and our lives texture, fullness and a chance to be exposed to those things that make our lives all the more meaningful.  These wonderful and unique differences set us apart with a call from God to do wonderful and amazing things for God’s kingdom here on earth that only we, with our uniqueness, could accomplish.

Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. If we truly follow this command our spirit of inclusion and joy will move through all aspects of our lives.

We are called to continually examine our thoughts and beliefs and discern just how we are loving our neighbor as ourselves. Do we trust God to show us where we may have been unwilling to welcome others? Do we allow God to unharden our hearts so we can learn from people we perceive as different from ourselves and wish and pray for them those things that we would wish and pray for ourselves?

How wonderful when all of God’s beloved live together in unity, acceptance and harmony. These are the elements of true peace, if we would but follow the Christ and his teaching of unconditional love.

How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.”     (Psalm 133: 1, 3)

Affirmation: “I experience wonderful harmony of spirit as I love my neighbor as I love myself.”
