There is a wonderful pull of Spirit within each of us. It is that “pull” that calls us to come to church and worship; it pulls at us and calls us to sit in prayer or meditation.   It pulls at us to gaze up at the heavens in wonder and in awe and it pulls at us to watch the waves on the seashore and contemplate the Infinite. The pull of Spirit within us is God knocking on our hearts and desiring fellowship with us.

As you move through your daily routine and look around you, and see the wonders of God in your life, do you ever feel so overwhelmed with the presence of God that you are moved to drop to your knees and praise God? It is an incredible experience when this happens. I have had it happen many times and usually when I am at home and thinking about all that God does in our world and in my life. I spoke about this a few Sunday evenings ago during our Evenlight Taize service. Being pulled by God, toward God, to be conscious of being within God, is wonderful. I did mention in the service that I have yet to have this happen while standing in the frozen food aisle at the super market, but hey, who knows, it could happen. They know I am a pastor, so they may not really be surprised.

People have occasionally said to me that they want to be so spiritual that realizing the presence of God in all things in their life becomes second nature. Theologian Richard Rohr speaks to this when he says Spirit is never “second nature,” but the very essence of who we truly are. I agree. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, but we lose contact with God because we dwell on our humanness at the expense of true spiritual self.  When we are pulled to turn to God it is Spirit being pulled to Itself, to reveal Itself in us, our conscious awareness of the full presence of God. We are meant to simply respond affirmatively and honor that pull.  When we honor that pull, and allow it to guide us, amazing things happen in and through our lives.

Know that God is always available to you and always seeking your fellowship. There is much that God wishes to share with each of us – we are pulled to listen.

O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.”   (Psalm 8:1)

Affirmation: “As God pulls me toward a greater awareness of the Divine Presence I respond today with thanksgiving and awe. How majestic indeed God is your name in all the earth.”
