“O give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the people.’” (1 Chronicles 16: 8)
All too often I think we fail to turn to God in prayer because, in the midst of all that is going on in our lives, we are just too overwhelmed to find the right words. We listen to others pray with their eloquent, stirring, lofting vocabulary and think we cannot begin to approach God with our little thoughts. The God that I believe in is not impressed with our words, but with our feelings and sincerity of spirit as we pray. There is no big or little to God, but only the unconditional love and presence of a Divine Spirit that holds us, cradles us, and nurtures us. We connect with that Spirit at the level of our willingness to recognize it. Sometimes I think the most beautiful prayer we can offer is simply to say “thank you.” It is often in those times, when words really fail us, but our feelings of the presence are strong, that “thank you” is all that we really need. How very pleasing our words of thanks must be to God.
Affirmation: “Here I am God, and I say thank you.”
