Our hearts break as we see the violence and the hatred that has spread out across our country. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded us that it is only light that can dispel the darkness, darkness will never accomplish that. So it is with renewed dedication that we lift up our prayers to Spirit/God for healings, understanding, reconciliation and peace.

Dearest God,

As our hearts break, and our tears stream forth with saddness and pain, we turn to you for strength. We turn to you for comfort in the face of unimaginable hatred and fear. In the darkness that seems to surround us with a never ending night may we begin to recognize the glimmer of light that flickers in each and every one of us. May that glimmer of light that seems so close to going out be empowered by our hope in a better tomorrow and a better world. May that glimmer of light be fueled by a faith that sees your Divine Presence with us even in the midst of challenges and obstacles. We know it is through your great love for us, God, that we are sustained in our grief and we are able to move confidently forward toward your light that blesses us with comfort. Our hope for our world rests in the ability of each and every one of us to see one another as perfect creations of God. Help us to see today with new understanding and compassion. To see as others see, to learn more fully to see through the lens of experience that others have lived, so that we may find common ground to love and support all your precious children. May we be teachable. Teachable in reaching out to get to know one another and to bless and celebrate our differences and our unique contibutions to life.

As we lift our prayers may we not stop there, but may we take action. Action to see what we can do to stop this maddness. Action to reach out, action to speak out, and action to be a people living the truth of their convictions. As you power our actions, God, may we go forth knowing you give us all that we need to make our voices known.

May we feel your presence as we move toward recovery from the events that have happened all around us. In our recovery may we learn the lessons, and find the solutions, so that these awful acts of violence will end. So that finally these events will end. It is only through our willingness to live together as brothers and sisters that we will find the center of new hope and possibility that will create the world we all desire to inhabit.

Walk us through all the emotions that flood us, and help us to live more fully in your light.
