“‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.”    (John 14: 18)

Jesus physical presence may no longer be among us, but he told us in the 14th chapter of the book of John that he would send an advocate – his Spirit, to live among us, to assist us, to minister to us, and to help us through our own personal physical lives. This spirit, he further tells us in scripture, abides with us, within us, as us.

This is powerful, for our advocate is not outside of us trying to control us externally, but, the scripture says, it abides with us. It has connected with us in a way that awakens us to the recognition that we have the Spirit of God with us in all of its fullness of power.

Jesus, our advocate comes to us, to abide with us, and to awaken us to who we really are as the children and creation of God. I especially love that Jesus tells us he will not leave us orphaned. In ancient times one who was orphaned had no power, no status and very little chance of survival, so the people to whom Jesus was speaking would have totally understood his message. The advocate would be with them to meet their needs and to provide abundantly for them in miraculous ways.

Jesus is also telling us that he understands us fully. He knows what it is to be human and to live on this earthly plane with all of its physical and earthly characteristics. He knows what it is to hurt, to have a broken heart, to be betrayed, to be hungry, to not be understood. He also knows what it is to have hopes, to have needs, to have dreams. Pick an earthly characteristic of life and Jesus knows what that is like. Good or bad. He has experienced it all and he knows how we feel.

Jesus understands us because Jesus has also walked on this earth. We have an advocate who loves us unconditionally and who goes before us to clear our path, light the way ahead, and show us new possibility that we never before imagined.

Affirmation: “What a friend we have in Jesus. One that knows us perfectly and still loves us.”
