“After this he said to them, ‘Follow me.’”   (John 21:19)

How could the Disciples have made sense of what they witnessed on that Friday as they watched what the Christ experienced in a horrific and brutal Roman execution? When the Disciples, in the first century, looked at the horror that was visited upon the Christ, and when we, in the twenty-first century, look at our most recent tragedies, what hope could we ever begin to find?

We find our hope, as did our ancient brethren, in the resurrected presence of the Christ, who reminds us that the power of God is always greater than the powers of this world.

Those who are cynical and like to throw our faith in our faces, because they have not allowed themselves to understand the power of God, have often said to me in response to what we see on the news, “so, where was your God when all of this horror was happening?” And I am here to tell you what I say to them, and that is that I know exactly where my God is. God was the first responder on that scene. I know that not because it is my job to know that, but because it is my life to know that. I have no life other than knowing that. I want no life other than knowing that.

God is always right where we are with a healing presence that affirms this prefect Spirit is with us always, to comfort and sustain us, to bless us, and to forever give us a renewed sense of hope. When we are in the most need God’s loving arms wrap tightly around us, hold us and comfort us with the assurance that joy does indeed come in the morning. To my cynical friends I have to ask, “Wouldn’t you love to receive such a beautiful gift?”

In the Jewish Talmud we read: “During the midst of the darkest night, act as though morning has already come.” God has not, does not, and will never forsake us. In the midst of whatever we may be going through God’s Divine, Perfect, and Loving presence is right there to reveal renewed hope, healing and forgiveness. This is the Spiritual Kingdom in which we are to live. God will always have the last word.

Affirmation: “The perfect flow of Spirit/God is the firm foundation of my life. I joyfully take my place as a proud resident of God’s Spiritual Kingdom.”

“Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”    (Matthew 13: 36)

One of the exciting things about taking time out in our lives for some reflection and discernment is that it gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect and examine where we are in life. Where our faith is strong or where it needs attention. Where our beliefs support our life in a forward moving way, or how they might limit us in being all that we can be. We can look at our attitudes about aspects of our life that we may wish to change, or we can celebrate those that work for us and in recognizing those aspects strive to do more of “that,” as we seek to serve God and God’s kingdom.

We can understand the parable of the weeds by reflecting on how the weeds represent stagnation and fear, how they represent negative attitudes that clutter our world and how they stop us from being able to see the road before us clearly. We can also begin to understand that these weeds represent that which chokes off our being able to experience the fullness of those things we would really like to experience.

Ever watch the program “Hoarders?” People hang on to that which is no longer of use for fear they may “need this” one day. Much of what they think they may need is broken, rusted, useless and not even complete. It is freeing to let go of what is old, outdated and useless, for unless we do that we can not make a space for the new, the exciting, the life affirming and the insights of new adventures God has planned for us.

For each of us we can make an important decision. We can decide that at long last it is time to weed out defeatest thinking, to letting the challenges of life overwhelm us and to believing that we are all alone and without a power of God in our lives. Spend some time and mentally let go of the weeds that choke off the life you desire. In the place of those weeds, plant seeds of seeing God’s blessings all around you. These new seeds will sprout, grow and bloom to create the life you want to live.

Affirmation: “Trusting in God I let go of limitations and see the possibilities of life.”

“What that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!”          (Numbers 11: 29)

This old-testament scripture proclaims the wish that all of God’s people would be prophets, anointed by the Spirit of God to proclaim the truths about God.  Prophets were not always the most popular of individuals and most of the prophets in our sacred texts wanted nothing to do with the call. They went reluctantly, but when they finally agreed to serve God did indeed fill them with amazing gifts. Prophets were unpopular partly because they told the people things the people just did not want to hear. Telling people to turn away from idolatry, from being guided by ones ego and self-aggrandizement, is never popular in any century.  Today, showing people a path of Light when they are comfortable in their darkness, can make one very unpopular.

Jesus did many prophetic things and to me one of the most amazing was when he cleared out the temple of the moneychangers. This was a cleansing of God’s house so that a greater truth could be realized and experienced. No more were old ways to be practiced. The temple cleansing foretells the cleansing that we too must experience in our lives. All that would block the full flow of Spirit God from being made known to us must be let loose. We must turn from the negative, defeatist outlook on life and embrace the fullness of God’s Spirit within. We are to be a pure and open channel for the presence and light of God to flow through us and out into the world that it would touch and mend the broken places. In doing so the fullness of God’s power and creation can be made known and experienced by all.

Sometimes radical decisions have to be made to accomplish the greater presence of God in our lives. All prophets tell the truth by first knowing the truth and we are all called to be that prophet. In Jeremiah 33 we read “ I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” As with the ancient prophets God will lead us and guide us to where we need to be, and God will write all that we need to know upon our hearts.

Affirmation: “Prophecy is about accountability. Today marks a new beginning in my accountability to God as an instrument of Spirits Divine presence in the world.”

Between the “already” and the “not yet.”

“Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You gave me room when I was in distress. Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.” (Psalm 4: 1)

Our prayers to God most often find us somewhere between the “already” and the “not yet.” We lift up our prayer from a place of what is going on in our lives at present, and we do so with the belief that through God’s wonderful blessing our circumstances will shift and change to what we ultimately desire to experience. One thing I love about our scripture is “you gave me room in my distress.” In the midst of whatever we are experiencing God is giving us space to recognize our answer and, to more importantly, grow in our faith as we move through that concern. This Psalm could have easily been one of lament and struggle through a time of distress, but instead it is one of hope, trust and possibility.

What is going on in your life today? We all have dreams, hopes, desires and expectations for a new tomorrow. Even within our “already,” no matter how that is looking for us, the presence of Spirit God is awesomely there, powerfully full of infinite blessing. In our “already” we can relax after offering up our prayer. We can let go, and allow God to move within us. What now seems to be the “not yet” will soon take place. But remember something very important. The “not yet” may show up in ways we had not thought possible. While we are waiting, praying and believing in our “miracle,” God is causing us to move to a new place, a new understanding and a new realization of Spirit working in our life. We are being changed, molded into new creation, one that is ever so much more receptive to the Spirit of God speaking in, through, and as, us. As we change, our answers to prayer change as well. Remember to be open for the new blessing, however that may look.  Part of the wonder and thrill of receiving our answers is in the “awe-struck” moment we have when we first realize indeed our answer has arrived.

Know this about what is “already” in your life: You are now and forever blessed by God, loved unconditionally by God, healed by God, anointed by God, and created perfectly by God. You are God’s beloved child. You are, not because you can earn it, (because you can’t), but because God loves you already with a grace that can not now, or ever, be broken.

Affirmation: “Even though I may not yet see the answers I seek, I know God is right now, and always, blessing me abundantly.”

“Do not fear, only believe.”   (Mark 5: 36)

Do you ever feel as though on your walk through life that you are taking two steps forward, one step back? Or even on some occasions, one step forward and two steps back? Life is often so random as we strive to move to the next positive thing we wish to experience. We can easily get discouraged and give up. The gospel writer Mark quotes Jesus as saying, “Do not fear, only believe.”

Okay, I know you are thinking, well that’s not always easily said in the midst of our “stuff.” And that is true. Those two steps back and one step forward times can be pretty discouraging. However, what I have come to believe is that even when life seems to be taking one or two steps backward, and we seem to be loosing ground toward our goal, that God is still a God who is right where we are at every moment. These are times when some inner reflection and self-examination can be helpful as we seek to take that next step forward. Maybe we can use this time to decide what our next decision should be, or just to say to God, “Okay, I know you are here with me, so you tell me what to do next.” You want to know something? God will let you know. It could be that you are not ready for the next forward step, or maybe the direction of that next step needs to be reconsidered. Or maybe you need to catch your breath, or “catch your faith.” What we can know is that we need never fear for God is walking with us, directing us.

Turning within and finding God (our finding, God is ALWAYS right there waiting our awareness of the Divine Presence) allows us to regroup and get back on track.  Sit in the quiet with God, let God wash over you with renewed positive energy and Light.  Just sit, in the quiet.  See the Light moving through your body washing away any negative emotions, hurt, anger or fear.  See the Light connecting with each and every cell, molecule and atom in your very being.  The Light awakens the inner being so it is firmly and clearly at one with all that is Perfect Spirit.  In this new realization of your connection with Spirit/God/Light, know, affirm for yourself, and believe, that God is giving you all the insights and knowledge you need for what is next.  You may not consciously understand the message at that very moment, but knowing you have received the message opens a space for it to come into your conscious awareness just when you need it.  Spirit/God is with us in our steps forward, and our steps back.  Each step has a message for us.  Letting God reveal that message can change your life.

“Do not fear, only believe.” Hold on to the vision you have been given (the one given to you by God). Keep your gaze on what you truly wish to experience, knowing that God will get you there, even when your steps take a different direction than you expected.

Affirmation: “Healing light moves through me and out into the world today to anoint each new step I take.”

Living The Lord’s Prayer

The following is my sermon delived on Sunday, August 7, 2016:

There are a few things we do in our worship services that are such routine that we can run the risk of doing them without much thought. In some churches there are many creeds or responses that are really quite wonderful, but over time they can tend to be recited over and over without our really stopping to think about what they mean. I grew up with communion and the Lord’s Prayer each week and sometimes I was “in” it and let it speak and minister to me, sometimes I confess maybe not so much. We did it, that’s what we do, I didn’t always give it a great deal of thought. We do both here each week, and I love that we do. I think it is important and beautiful. But I do think it can be a good idea to look at the Lord’s Prayer from time to time in a conscious effort to deepen our understanding and commitment to it. It’s also helpful to examine just what we mean when we say this prayer. How does it, or not, inform and speak to our faith?

When I was growing up my parents were big fans of the King James translation of the Bible. I would bring home the Revised Standard, or the Amplified, or the Living Bible, but they would only read the King James. When I asked them about it they always said they loved the beauty and poetry of the language and the words in the King James. To them, that was “the Bible.” I thought it was pretty, but somehow it didn’t always touch me or feed my need to understand its real or deeper meaning as it applied to my life. I guess growing up in a world where people didn’t routinely say “thees”, and “thous” this language got in my way just a bit.

I love to watch children as they engage in the morning service – or not. Well, of course they aren’t engaged as we adults are, but in their own way they are experiencing something. Maybe even in a more pure way. I think, for example, when I see young Dylan, at age three, come forward in our service for communion. From a child’s perspective I can see how everything is so big and heightened for him, and so new. The experience is speaking to him, though the true meaning of it isn’t really known. Doesn’t matter, he is anxious to participate and receive. I see in his eyes, in the eyes of all children when they come forward, a true wonder of the experience. They are having an encounter with God, with Jesus, and it can serve as a precious memory years later of an amazing experience.

Several years ago I made the decision that in my spirtual walk I was going to become more engaged with what I was doing. Today many people call this MINDFULNESS, being fully present in the NOW moment with what one is doing. I find this powerful. Both in quiet meditation, but also in my daily routine. It is taking nothing for granted, but seeking to experience each moment, each breath, each step, each gesture, as one does it. Not always easy. A great exercise to do however.

One of the things that concerned me most was my relationship with the Lord’s Prayer. I decided I wanted to not only SAY, not only READ it in a bulletin and take it for granted, but I wanted to LIVE IT. That became my challenge and my goal. How am I doing so far? Well, like all challenges and all intentions, it is A PROCESS.

My first way of engaging more fully was to find out just why we have this prayer at all. Why did Jesus give this to his followers? What was he trying to teach them?

Jesus is giving his beautiful Sermon on the Mount. He understood that his followers, who were good practicing Jews, would follow the religious acts and rituals of their faith. But what he was most interested in doing was transforming the minds and the attitudes of those within the faith. He wanted them to share in his vivid consciousness of the reality, power and omnipresence of God. He also wanted the experience of God’s power and presence to be personal, deeply felt and not at all putting on a show for others. There was enough of that to be seen in this ancient time. There were always people screaming and shouting and flailing about on street corners. That was an all to common sight. That was not what one was to model. Turn within, Jesus taught, find God there, and then dwell in that beautiful secret place with God.

Okay, I am actually a person who loves my solitude. Finding quiet time is something I actually crave. I thought, I can do that. I can be in the silence with God. I said the prayer. Okay. Now what?

One day I decided that in my quiet time I was going to parse the prayer. Break it down to its parts and see how they speak to me. Taken as a whole sometimes things, especially scripture, I find, can be a lot to understand.

I started with OUR FATHER. The idea that God is not only a magnificent omnipotent being, capable of mighty miracles and blessings, but we have a meaningful connection. I know I ere, I know I need to see that I have erred. God can show me that, in a loving way I can understand. I always know that we humans too easily think of God in OUR image, rather than thinking of ourselves created in God’s image. There is a difference, and we limit God when we think of God in our image.   But even more amazing to me than the two words, OUR FATHER, was the first word, OUR. We are connected to God and God to us. God is our connection to one another. God is the God of each and every one of us. Our creator, our hope. God bound each of us together in an experience of community that helps lift each and every one of us. Wow, I loved how this engagement with the scripture was beginning. This was not only enlightening, it was fun.

WHO ART IN HEAVEN. I gave that one a lot of thoughtful contemplation. The first thing that came to mind for me was the age old question, “where is heaven?” Is God far off someplace, far removed and distant? Just where is God? I actually had some interesting discussions with people about that one. We all seemed to come to the same conclusion. Looking at the whole of scripture, and this prayer in particular, we came to the only conclusion that really spoke of God’s unconditional love for God’s creation. That God is always right where we are at every moment, in all that we are doing and wherever we are – and therefore heaven is found within each and every one of us.

This further began to make sense for me when I thought about ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. That God, who is always available to us, and ever present, is in God’s heaven, and right where we are, so heaven is HERE, waiting for us to experience it. I had to stop and spend some time with that. Live with that. Heaven is right here, waiting for me to experience it. As I did, I began to feel this prayer become even more alive for me. Never again would I be able to just say these words. In living them I would also have to proclaim them. If to no one else, certainly to myself.

And when you stop to think about it – what we live, we proclaim, and vice versa.

This further made sense as we pray THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE. For years I thought this was telling us that we are waiting for God to come, but not so. It is stating that the kingdom is here. We can, and we are, to live it in now. This prayer invites us to be engaged in living in the kingdom, mindful of our NOW moments and not living on auto-pilot. Okay, I loved this. I realized my understanding of the prayer was just beginning, and that was all right. At least I could celebrate moving in the right direction.   I am opening up a space within me toward understanding more.

Like little Dylan, who in his wide-eyed wonder, comes down the aisle enthusiastically to take communion, I can live in the wonder of God’s heaven on earth, recognizing more and more of it at each and every turn of life. It must begin somewhere, and it can, no matter what our age.

What is prayer really – but a chance to understand with greater awareness the presence of God? It always moves us to a new place, otherwise, why pray at all? Emmet Fox (Theologian and New Thought teacher) uses a great example of a ladder. We get a ladder when we can’t reach something, otherwise if we could reach it, who needs the ladder? We pray when we need to take that next step in our relationship with God. I have found that the Lord’s Prayer can really help me in doing that. One step at a time – one greater conscious awareness of God’s beautiful presence in our lives.

I remember when I was a little kid, just learning to read. I was maybe 5 or 6, when my mother brought me a new book. I loved this book and I hadn’t really thought about it much in many years until recently.

She gave me the book because it was about young Jesus. Jesus is a little boy, like I was, and he was with Joseph in the carpentry shop. Joseph is doing his thing, making and creating something, building something, and, watching him, Jesus picks up some wood and begins to carve on it. Slowly he carves and soon it becomes clear what it is he is making. He carves out a bird. A beautiful life-sized little bird, made in wood. He holds it lovingly, tenderly, admiring his creation when suddenly be breathes on it. And it comes to life. He holds now this living bird of his creation in his hands as it begins to stretch, and flap its wings, and he lifts up his arms and the bird flies away. He has set his creation free.

Remembering this story seemed to bless me in my engagement with the Lord’s Prayer. And it continues my thoughtful engagement with this prayer as it gives me a renewed relationship with God each time I think about it. I am God’s creation. We are all God’s perfect creation. God has breathed life into us and God has set us free. On earth, as it is in heaven.

In my parsing of this scripture I looked at other translations. Sometimes they can really help our understanding. The Message translation somehow stirs my thinking, maybe just perhaps its so different from the others, but also I think because its kind of fun. This other way of thinking about the prayer can add to our understanding as it speaks to us. Here is what it says:

Matthew 6:9-13 (The Message)

Jesus in response to his disciples asking him how they should pray:

“This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
‘Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.’”

I may never breath on a wooden bird and bring it to life – but I will always keep trying to take that next step up the ladder of faith for new understanding of God in my life. Reaching out to God, in prayer, and then living that prayer, is a great way to begin.

(I didn’t quite get through this whole, beautiful prayer in one sermon, so it will continue next week)

What If We Change Our Thinking?

“My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”     (Psalm 121:2)

Why do we say affirmations of faith and belief? Why do I write an affirmation at the end of this column and why do I Tweet out an affirmation each morning?  Why do we stand and say a weekly affirmation together at the close of our Sunday morning worship, (right before we sing “Let There Be Peace On Earth,”) and head out from church to move back into the world in hopes of making a difference? We say affirmations of faith because they remind us, in a positive and uplifting way, of who we are as God’s precious creation.

But are these words powerful? No, not in and of themselves. We can say these words, and carry around affirmation cards by the bundle, but we have to believe and proclaim that what the message is saying to us is the truth about who we are. They are to remind us that as spiritual beings our humanity has enormous potential and purpose.

Our words alone can’t get us there, but they are a start. Our feelings, experiences, the stirring of our soul and our inner belief become a state of mind that changes us. What affirmations do is get us going in the right direction. They remind us of the truth of who we are as God’s creation. They remind us that as spiritual beings our search for our humanity is a process. Each day we can move closer toward the fullness of our humanity and our spiritual nature by becoming true and real partners with one another in this marvelous thing that we call life. Our affirmative thinking picks us up when we stumble and it gives us hope that in the darkness of life there is still light waiting for us up ahead.

When Jesus healed the blind, the lame, the bleeding; when he raised Lazarus or the little girl from the dead, he was seeing beyond the appearance of the physical and seeing through to the truth of the spiritual.  Jesus saw possibility where it is all too easy for us to see limitation.  Jesus calls us to do likewise.

Why affirmations, why affirmative thinking? It reminds us who we are and it stirs up our realization and recognition that the Spirit of God dwells within us and is always available to us to meet our needs at this and every moment.  When we remember this, when we pray like this, our lives truly do change. When we change our thinking our lives truly change for the better. Spirit/God becomes much more real to us and our experience of Divine Light becomes that much brighter.

Affirmation: “I let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart reveal the fullness of God’s presence.”
