What that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!”          (Numbers 11: 29)

This old-testament scripture proclaims the wish that all of God’s people would be prophets, anointed by the Spirit of God to proclaim the truths about God.  Prophets were not always the most popular of individuals and most of the prophets in our sacred texts wanted nothing to do with the call. They went reluctantly, but when they finally agreed to serve God did indeed fill them with amazing gifts. Prophets were unpopular partly because they told the people things the people just did not want to hear. Telling people to turn away from idolatry, from being guided by ones ego and self-aggrandizement, is never popular in any century.  Today, showing people a path of Light when they are comfortable in their darkness, can make one very unpopular.

Jesus did many prophetic things and to me one of the most amazing was when he cleared out the temple of the moneychangers. This was a cleansing of God’s house so that a greater truth could be realized and experienced. No more were old ways to be practiced. The temple cleansing foretells the cleansing that we too must experience in our lives. All that would block the full flow of Spirit God from being made known to us must be let loose. We must turn from the negative, defeatist outlook on life and embrace the fullness of God’s Spirit within. We are to be a pure and open channel for the presence and light of God to flow through us and out into the world that it would touch and mend the broken places. In doing so the fullness of God’s power and creation can be made known and experienced by all.

Sometimes radical decisions have to be made to accomplish the greater presence of God in our lives. All prophets tell the truth by first knowing the truth and we are all called to be that prophet. In Jeremiah 33 we read “ I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” As with the ancient prophets God will lead us and guide us to where we need to be, and God will write all that we need to know upon our hearts.

Affirmation: “Prophecy is about accountability. Today marks a new beginning in my accountability to God as an instrument of Spirits Divine presence in the world.
