“An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1: 20)

Angels have always fascinated me. Their beauty and their significance in scripture cannot go unnoticed. I have many Angel lapel pins that I wear often for they always bring comments that lead to interesting discussions. I think that perhaps Angels fascinate us all. Angels appear throughout the Bible as God’s “Western Union.” They may appear in many different forms, but they are always around to speak to us, just as they spoke to people thousands of years ago. Angels speak to us for God, and about God. They offer us solace and comfort and help us understand more fully the all too often unexplainable.

I grew up learning that we always have Angels around us, protecting us, guiding us, and offering us help. That is, if we ask them, if we listen to them. But we must listen, and listen with an intention to understand. It was an Angel who spoke to Joseph and directed him to a course of action that has changed history. An Angel spoke to Mary and led her to understand the presence of God working through her life. Both listened, they heard the message, they understood God was telling them something of great importance. They followed the direction from God to not be afraid, but to trust, to believe and to move forward in faith. How beautiful that an Angel opened their eyes to recognize the coming of the Lord.

May our eyes too be opened to receive the message of Christ’s presence, take it deep within ourselves and allow it to change the course of our lives.

Affirmation: “I stop to listen and hear God’s message. No matter how it arrives, I know God’s Spirit speaks to me, and I am changed.”
