“Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” (Matthew 13: 36)
One of the exciting things about taking time out in our lives for some reflection and discernment is that it gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect and examine where we are in life. Where our faith is strong or where it needs attention. Where our beliefs support our life in a forward moving way, or how they might limit us in being all that we can be. We can look at our attitudes about aspects of our life that we may wish to change, or we can celebrate those that work for us and in recognizing those aspects strive to do more of “that,” as we seek to serve God and God’s kingdom.
We can understand the parable of the weeds by reflecting on how the weeds represent stagnation and fear, how they represent negative attitudes that clutter our world and how they stop us from being able to see the road before us clearly. We can also begin to understand that these weeds represent that which chokes off our being able to experience the fullness of those things we would really like to experience.
Ever watch the program “Hoarders?” People hang on to that which is no longer of use for fear they may “need this” one day. Much of what they think they may need is broken, rusted, useless and not even complete. It is freeing to let go of what is old, outdated and useless, for unless we do that we can not make a space for the new, the exciting, the life affirming and the insights of new adventures God has planned for us.
For each of us we can make an important decision. We can decide that at long last it is time to weed out defeatest thinking, to letting the challenges of life overwhelm us and to believing that we are all alone and without a power of God in our lives. Spend some time and mentally let go of the weeds that choke off the life you desire. In the place of those weeds, plant seeds of seeing God’s blessings all around you. These new seeds will sprout, grow and bloom to create the life you want to live.
Affirmation: “Trusting in God I let go of limitations and see the possibilities of life.”
