Years ago my uncle endeavored to teach me to play chess. What I remember the most about this experience was his direction to “see the whole board.” To look at the bigger picture, not just the minute, individual parts. Seeing just the next move can be deceiving, or cause us to have to make more moves down the line than otherwise necessary, but looking toward the greater outcome we desire can cause our immediate decision to have so much more meaning and impact.
This is sound advice for the way we live, and view, our lives. To look at the bigger picture, to “see the whole board.” We are each part of the wonderful mosaic of God’s design, and our actions make a difference to the health and beauty of that design. When we smile at a stranger, pray prayers of intercession for others, both known and unknown to us, when we contribute out of the bounty we have received to further the good of others. Contributions to our church, to our community, to our world may seem small, but seeing the “whole board,” and what a tiny seed can do in the larger picture, allows us to live more fully in the community of God. What is in part, makes up a healthy whole. As we see the bigger picture, and the unlimitedness of God, we each experience the presence and blessing of an infinite, bountiful God.
“Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be is not yet revealed. What we know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.” (1 John 3: 2)
Affirmation: “God’s bounty is unlimited. Whenever I have a need, or questions, I have a little talk with God. Prayer is indeed therapy for my soul.”
